An Ode to Aloo
Who writes on inane things like Potatoes!
Maybe people who have managed to ward off other woes.
Our humble everyday aloo,
Despite fitness fads, I love you.
The word “aloo” has a Persian connection,
Introduced by the Portuguese as batata, it’s actually Peruvian.
They got it to Indian shores in 17th century,
It went “viral”; the craze spread across the whole country.
Farmers going berserk, a new crop to grow, sell & eat,
More variety for vegetarians, added flavour to dishes with meat.
Samosa with aloo may not anymore be like Bihar without Laloo
But its absence in chaats & tikkis will surely cause a hullabaloo.
Carbs or not,
Warm or piping hot,
You can’t have a party without them chips,
Leaves us licking the masala off our fingertips.
Try not to eat them fried
When steamed, boiled or just cooked, it shows its good side!
